2025 Land Rover Defender OCTA: Vicki Butler-Henderson Drives the Most Powerful Defender Ever

Quick Verdict: The Land Rover Defender OCTA produces 635hp from a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, reaches 62mph in 4 seconds and costs £148,000. Vicki finds it genuinely playful off-road and surprisingly composed on road, with 6D Dynamics giving it remarkable agility for its size. Buyers wanting more on-road involvement should consider the Porsche Cayenne.

Vicki notes that the Defender OCTA uses the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 also found in the latest BMW M5, producing 635hp and 750Nm, with up to 800Nm available using Dynamic Launch Mode. Power is sent through an eight-speed automatic transmission with high and low range and all-wheel drive. It is 7cm wider and 3cm taller than the standard Defender 110 and costs £148,000. The OCTA brings 6D Dynamics suspension to a Defender for the first time, following its debut on the Range Rover Sport SV.

This review is based on first-hand driving impressions from Vicki Butler-Henderson, who tested the OCTA both off road and on public roads.

What Is the Land Rover Defender OCTA?

The Defender OCTA is the most powerful and capable Defender ever produced, sitting at the top of the Defender range. The name derives from the octahedral shape of a diamond, chosen to represent strength and durability. At £148,000 it costs more than double a Defender 110, reflecting extensive engineering development rather than cosmetic differentiation.

Vicki notes that the OCTA's 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 also powers the latest BMW M5. The 6D Dynamics suspension was previously used on the Range Rover Sport SV and appears on a Defender here for the first time. Defender production takes place at JLR's Nitra Manufacturing Centre in Slovakia.

What makes the Land Rover Defender OCTA special:

  • 635hp from a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 which Vicki notes also powers the latest BMW M5, with 750Nm and up to 800Nm using Dynamic Launch Mode
  • 6D Dynamics suspension borrowed from the Range Rover Sport SV, featuring longer wishbones and active dampers controlling pitch and roll with the fastest steering ratio of any Defender
  • 1,000mm wading depth, deeper than any previous production Defender
  • OCTA Mode is the first performance-focused off-road mode in any Defender, enabling Off-Road Launch and a unique off-road ABS calibration
  • 3,500kg towing capacity with optional electric tow bar
  • Exposed Phosphor Bronze-finished front and rear recovery points
  • Body and Soul seat technology allowing occupants to feel music through the seat structure
  • 972 to 2,277 litres of boot space with a flat load floor

What Does the Land Rover Defender OCTA Look Like?

The Defender OCTA keeps the familiar upright shape of the Defender 110, but adds several distinctive changes. It is almost 7cm wider thanks to extended wheel arches and sits nearly 3cm higher, while the grille gets unique octagonal detailing and the bumpers are redesigned for more extreme off-road use. Four exhaust outlets and exposed Phosphor Bronze-finished recovery points further set it apart.

A gloss black roof and tailgate contrast with the body colour, while the tested car wears 20-inch diamond-turned satin dark tint wheels with Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac RT tyres. Vicki also points out that the car’s 1.995m height could rule out some car parks, despite the OCTA being more commonly spotted on the school run than in the terrain it was designed for.

How Does the Land Rover Defender OCTA Drive?

Performance and On-Road Character

The V8 produces 635hp and 750Nm, with peak torque available from 1,800rpm to almost 6,000rpm. From the driver's seat the power feels substantial at all throttle positions, with the V8 responding immediately. Body roll is well controlled despite the height and mass.

6D Dynamics Suspension

The 6D Dynamics suspension is the defining engineering feature of the OCTA. Borrowed from the Range Rover Sport SV, it uses longer and tougher wishbones alongside unique active dampers to manage pitch and roll with a precision not previously possible in a Defender. Comfort mode adjusts automatically for refined ride quality. Dynamic mode sharpens steering, suspension and throttle response for more aggressive driving. The fastest steering ratio of any Defender is standard. According to Land Rover, this suspension system fundamentally changes on-road behaviour while preserving off-road capability.

Off-Road Capability and OCTA Mode

Off-road, the OCTA transforms into something that approaches a rally car in character, with the 6D suspension proving essential for high-speed driving over loose surfaces. OCTA Mode is the first performance-focused off-road mode on any Defender. Activating it turns the display and gear paddles red and enables Off-Road Launch. With the lowest traction-control settings selected, it also engages a unique off-road ABS calibration. Up to 800Nm of combined engine and mild-hybrid torque is available using Dynamic Launch Mode. Vicki finds the vehicle genuinely playful at speed off-road, with exceptional tyre grip providing confidence across sand, mud, gravel and ruts.

Land Rover Defender OCTA driving off road

ClearSight Ground View effectively makes the bonnet transparent, helping the driver see the terrain immediately ahead. Low range is available for slower, more technical off-road driving, while the 6D Dynamics system helps each corner articulate over obstacles. Terrain Response settings cover sand, mud, ruts, grass, gravel, snow and rock.

Is the Land Rover Defender OCTA Practical?

Boot and Storage:

The OCTA offers 972 litres of boot space with the rear seats in place, expanding to 2,277 litres with all seats folded to provide a flat load floor. The tailgate features a soft-close mechanism. Optional black roof rails cost just over £300. The electric tow bar is a £1,200 option enabling 3,500kg towing.

Towing:

The 3,500kg towing capacity is up there with the best, as Vicki notes. The electric tow bar is an option at £1,200.

What Is the Land Rover Defender OCTA Interior Like?

Cabin:

The interior represents a significant departure from the Defender's utilitarian origins, with a level of luxury matching the Range Rover. Comprehensive connectivity and premium materials create an interior that is as plush as the flagship Range Rover. Five adults fit comfortably, with ample headroom from the panoramic roof including attic windows for rear passengers.

Body and Soul Seats:

The Body and Soul seat system allows occupants to physically feel music through the seat structure, with bass frequencies creating a ripple-like sensation through the seat material. The technology functions more as a distinctive novelty than a transformative feature, but is unique to the OCTA in the Defender range.

Connectivity:

Vicki highlights the OCTA's wireless phone charging, cool box and comprehensive connectivity. The panoramic roof provides natural light throughout the cabin.

What Wheels and Tyres Does the Land Rover Defender OCTA Have?

The tested OCTA wears 20-inch diamond-turned satin dark tint wheels, while 22-inch lightweight alloy wheels are also available. Both configurations use the same tyre size front and rear.

How Does the Land Rover Defender OCTA Compare to Rivals?

Defender OCTA vs Porsche Cayenne

Vicki points buyers wanting more on-road involvement towards the Porsche Cayenne. The OCTA counters with genuine extreme off-road capability, a 1,000mm wading depth and its dedicated OCTA off-road performance mode.

Defender OCTA vs Mercedes-AMG G63

The Mercedes-AMG G63 emphasises presence and brute force from its V8, with icon status from its original military heritage. The G63 suits buyers who want the most recognisable vehicle in this class, while the OCTA offers more sophisticated suspension technology and deeper wading ability.

Defender OCTA vs Range Rover Sport SV

The Range Rover Sport SV shares the OCTA's 6D Dynamics suspension, offering a more refined grand touring character with the same engineering base. It suits buyers who prioritise long-distance road comfort and a more discreet appearance. The OCTA counters with superior off-road capability and its unique OCTA Mode.

Is the Land Rover Defender OCTA Worth Buying?

The Defender OCTA makes its case for buyers with both deep pockets and deep ruts. At £148,000 it delivers the most powerful Defender ever built with genuine extreme off-road capability, 6D Dynamics suspension and 3,500kg towing in a package that is surprisingly composed on road. Buyers who will never exploit the off-road performance should consider the Porsche Cayenne for more on-road involvement. Buyers who want the OCTA's off-road character with more road refinement should consider the Range Rover Sport SV.

The case for the Land Rover Defender OCTA:

  • 635hp V8 which Vicki notes also powers the latest BMW M5, with 0-62mph in 4 seconds from 2.5 tonnes
  • 6D Dynamics suspension from the Range Rover Sport SV on a Defender for the first time
  • 1,000mm wading depth, deeper than any previous production Defender
  • OCTA Mode with Off-Road Launch and a dedicated off-road ABS calibration
  • 3,500kg towing capacity with optional electric tow bar
  • 972 to 2,277 litres of boot space with a flat load floor

Before you buy:

  • At 1.995m tall, the OCTA may not fit into some height-restricted car parks
  • At £148,000 the majority of buyers will rarely exploit the extreme off-road engineering
  • Vicki points buyers wanting more on-road involvement towards the Porsche Cayenne
